Today, our Robert Eversole, DDS, PC team would like to address three oral health issues that can plague your smile over time. As October is National Dental Hygiene Month, be mindful that your dental care is as vital as your overall health. Let’s look at how to nurture your smile as you age.

1- Address dental filling issues: dental fillings break down over time and tend to last from eight to ten years, but some can last up to 15 years depending on the material and care. As fillings break down, food and bacteria will buildup underneath the fillings and invite decay. Brushing and flossing daily will keep your fillings sturdy longer, as will seeing your dentist routinely to spot problems with fillings early to avoid decay.

2- Address gum disease issues: gum disease is an infection of the gums which is serious. Gum disease can over time damage them and even destroy the jawbone. Brushing and flossing daily will keep harmful bacterial plaque at bay which otherwise builds up on teeth. If not removed regularly, plaque will harden into tartar and wreak irreversible damage to the jawbone, and that can leave you with tooth loss. Clean your teeth and gumline daily, and visit your dentist every six months to remove damaging tartar.

3- Address oral cancer issues: Oral cancer is more prevalent with age, especially for men over 40. If you use tobacco use or alcohol frequently, be aware that they contribute to cancers of the mouth, tongue, and throat. Fortunately, our dentist checks for oral cancer during routine exams. This is why most oral cancers are initially diagnosed by your dentist during routine exams.
